Post Vasectomy Pain

Unfortunately about 1 in 20 men develop long term, chronic troublesome scrotal pain after a vasectomy.   A small proportion of these men have severe enough pain to require some form of surgery to cure it.

There are four options if pain is severe enough:

• you can sometimes find a small lump appears of the tube at the vasectomy site, called a sperm granuloma which, if present, can be removed with good results.
• you can reverse the vasectomy on the side of the pain. The success rate of reversal of vasectomy is quoted in medical journals to be about 75-80% for relief of post-vasectomy pain.   On the up side the tube is restored to it’s natural condition but on the down side fertility may well return.
• you can remove the epididymis (as this tube is no longer required after vasectomy).  The operation removing the tube near the testes causing the pain is called an ‘epididymectomy’. We also have considerable expertise in this and have published excellent outcomes for this operation surgery in the American medical press with 93% reporting improvement.
• see a pain specialist who can inject a nerve block to help numb the pain – often for long periods.
